ABOUT US

Trent Students For Literacy (TSL) is a student-run levy group at Trent University dedicated to fostering the academic growth and literacy development of children and youth in the Peterborough community. Our mission is to provide essential support in math and literacy, share the joys of reading, and enhance reading and writing skills through a variety of engaging programs and events all free of charge. Literacy is crucial for personal and academic success. By helping young people develop strong literacy and math skills, we empower them to reach their full potential. Literacy enables people to access information, communicate effectively, and think critically.

"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development, an essential complement to investments in roads, dams, clinics and factories. Literacy is a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity. Especially for girls and women, it is an agent of family health and nutrition. For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right.... Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential."

Former UN General Secretary Kofi Annan, speaking on International Literacy Day, 1997
